Chicago Girls Learn to be Leaders of Change

The Greater Chicago chapter of WTS International hosted a Transportation YOU event on a Saturday Picture1morning in partnership with Chicago Public Schools at the WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff Chicago offices. Twenty motivated girls attended the event and embraced the opportunity to learn about leadership and public speaking. Author and Coach Cyndi Maxey presented “Speak Up and Stand Out,” an interactive presentation on public speaking skills. The presentation was followed by a hands-on workshop titled “Girls Driving for a Difference,” in which the students discovered their leadership style and developed a mission statement for an issue in society that they would like to positively impact. The workshop was led by trained leaders in the transportation field who worked with the participants one-on-one to identify their unique strengths, discover their leadership style, and re-frame problems in the world as opportunities, boosting their confidence and motivation to become a leader and innovator in the future. This unique workshop was designed at Stanford University, drawing inspiration from the Stanford Design School’s design-thinking tools to inspire girl power in creative new ways. The workshop helped the participants explore their passions, think outside of the box about their abilities, and inspired them to develop a personal mission statement for improving the world around them.IMG_9043
