Chicago Girls Learn to Design Transit Stations

station 2 This past spring, volunteers from WTS Chicago’s Transportation YOU program, HNTB Corporation, and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) shared their work experiences and introduced 35 girls to exciting transportation careers.

To kick off the tour, CTA volunteers showed the girls some of the features of Fullerton Red/Brown Line station in Chicago. The girls then hopped inside four brand new 5000 Series rail cars for the chartered train ride and had the opportunity to see how the trains are operated. At every stop, the girls learned what was unique about each station directly from some of CTA’s fabulous female planners.

After the tour, the girls dstation 1esigned their very own elevated train stations with guidance from the volunteer engineers and architects. The project allowed them to get creative and apply what they learned. The day-long event provided the girls with a first-hand look at the exciting field of transportation and the confidence that they, too, can become transportation engineers one day soon.
