Transportation Design Talk Sparks Interest at Columbus School

columbus design 1 Recently, Kristine Connolly, Tracey Nixon, and Elizabeth Royster from the WTS Columbus Chapter Transportation YOU Committee hosted a transportation design talk for the Columbus School for Girls Upper School Design Class. The presentation was a perfect fit for this audience, as the school’s motto is “All Girl, By Design.” The 14 girls in the program were curious about the transportation projects from the very start of the planning, design, and construction process; they asked questions such as “Why will this specific project be useful, and what are the safety, societal, traffic and environmental concerns that have led to this project?” and “How can lessons learned from previous projects be implemented on this project?”columbus design 2

Traffic modeling software of local hot-spot projects were run with the girls so they could see real-world applications of existing and proposed traffic concepts. Crash data analysis was discussed, and the event ended with an informative presentation on traffic calming methods and environmental lighting solutions. The girls came away from the event with an interest in transportation careers and the confidence to pursue them.
